The Volta Hotel is a 3-Star hotel located 360 feet above sea level that overlooks Ghana’s hydroelectric power plant. While this doesn’t sound exactly like a relaxing getaway, au contraire, the place is absolutely beautiful. The hotel rooms are comfortable, but nothing extravagant and cost $98 for single occupancy or $108 for double occupancy a night. The facility offers all the serviced needed for an entertaining vacation or successful business trip, including a conference room, business center with 24/7 internet, gift shop, restaurant (offering both local and continental fair), bar, pool, tennis court and golf practice park. The hotel also houses the Adowa nightclub, which has won regional and national awards for the best nightclub from the Ghana Tourist Board. However, the hotel’s real attraction is the large bar and lounge area encased by glass windows providing a panoramic view of the Akosombo Dam and the lush surrounding landscape.
This world famous dam produces energy for Ghana as well as its neighboring countries Togo and Benin. The dam created the Volta Lake, which covers around 3.5% of the country’s total area. It was at one time the largest manmade lake in the world, and still remains in the top five. The dam is a source of pride for the country, which was the first sub-Saharan country to gain independence. The sight of the dam embodies the African struggle to progress and the advances that are being made.
The hotel also offers a closer look with cruises on its 3 story 150 foot wide Dodi Princess. This trip brings visitors onto Lake Volta and to Dodi Island to give a more intimate look at the lake and the dam. The boat offers an air conditioned deck, indoor video games, an onboard swimming pool and charcoal barbeque lunches. This adventure is a bargain, costing the equivalent of about $20 for adults and $13 for children. The boat is also available for private charter during the week.
This is great for Charlotteans who enjoy cruising on Lake Norman, and are interested in downtown’s ongoing construction.
