World Wrestling Entertainment always likes to pull out the stops during the hot summer months. Thanks to USA Network head honcho Bonnie Hammer, WWE RAW has found itself in a prime position on USA’s television roster.
This is the third summer in a row now that WWE RAW has put together a summer-long hook to draw viewers in on a weekly basis. Two summers ago there was the “Mr. McMahon’s illegitimate son” storyline, followed by last year’s “McMahon Multi-Million Dollar Mania.” Now this summer the RAW brand is being run by a series of “guest hosts,” as opposed to the now traditional General Manager authority figure that usually heads up the show. It is an idea created by Donald Trump during that fleeting week when he “owned” the RAW brand.
A couple appearances by Trump have led the appearance of actor/writer/comedian Seth Green on tonight’s broadcast where he as guest host put himself in the main event alongside five of WWE’s giants, which naturally saw Seth and his tag team partners John Cena and Triple H stand tall over the villainous Legacy.
It was announced during tonight’s show that Billy Gibbons and Dusty Hill of ZZ Top will host next week’s Monday Night RAW in Raleigh, North Carolina. ZZ Top are long-time WWE fans and should provide some variety at least to often stale RAW brand. Plus the rockers will fit right in with the Carolina crowd, an area rich in southern rock tradition and pro wrestling culture.
I fully expect the guest host tour of stars to continue through the summer before a big summer-end story changes the RAW brand back to the old status quo. However for the time being it is entertaining to see low level celebrities, who are admitted fans of the company, mixing in with injured stars and wrestlers from days gone by (like last week’s “Million $ Man” Ted DiBiase) in order to keep WWE (and USA Network’s) flagship fresh and a continued ratings winner.
