Pro wrestling isn’t a real sport. Go ahead, I’ll wait so you can let that sink in for a minute. But one of the fun illusions of wrestling as a sport is that advent of championships that are “won and lost” in the spirit of competition.
World Wrestling Entertainment, divided between its three television shows and three touring groups, boasts a total of nine championships. Each of their shows has their own Heavyweight champion, plus both RAW and SmackDown! have a tag championship, a women’s championship and a “secondary” title, which is for wrestlers who aren’t quite yet to the main even level. The RAW television show features the Intercontinental Championship while the SmackDown! show features the United States Championship.
As for TNA Wrestling, their company features a World Heavyweight Title, a woman’s title, a tag championship and the “X-Division” Championship, which is essentially their belt for the lighter weight, fast, high-flying wrestlers.
Titles are defended regularly, usually on television and pay per view monthly, and whenever the companies put on non-televised events. It’s not like a boxing or mixed martial arts championship where Titles are defended only every few months. In fact the wrestling “rule book” states a championship needs to be defended every thirty days.
So what I expect to be a recurring feature, here is a look at a current champions roll call for both WWE and TNA.
