In today’s economy, champagne tastes take a back seat to the average consumer’s beer budget. Luxuries are put off in favor of more practical purchases. In response, many jewelry designers are offering previously eschewed materials such as platinum sterling silver, semi-precious stones, and other lower cost alternatives. One such offering that is growing in popularity is pearls.
In general, pearls are associated to older, statelier women. The first image that comes to mind is Jackie O with her quintessential single strand of pearls or Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's. Today’s pearl designs, however, buck the notion that only your mom can wear pearls.
Increasingly, pearl offerings are chic and contemporary. Layered pearls are growing in popularity and offer a classy yet casual and funky look all at the same time. Katherine Heigl was recently spotted wearing layered David Yurman, Jean Hornig, and J. Crew pearls in Los Angeles. Vera Wang is offering a grey glass pearl and rhinestone necklace through her Simply Vera collection. Other designers are doing the same.
Pearls, though considered a precious gemstone, are significantly lower in cost that diamonds, rubies, sapphires and the like. This makes them very attractive in a market where every dime is strained to the limit. Many designs are running between $15 and $100, so there are pearl designs to fit any budget.
Pearls, like diamonds, never go out of style. So don’t be constrained, express your inner pearl girl and know that even when money is tight, you can always remain fashionably bejeweled.
