October has been designated by American Humane as Adopt-a-Dog month.

There are so many dogs waiting in breed rescues and animal shelters that are in need of loving homes. They often make the very best pets, as though they seem to appreciate a good family when they have one.

If you have ever walked the hallways or the rows between pens of Denver Dumb Friends League, Table Mountain Animal Center, or any of several other shelters in Colorado, your heart has reached out to wagging wishful canines looking up to ask, "Will you please take me home?" Maybe you have browsed Petfinder several times, only to put the decision off for a while. You were just window shopping, and had second thoughts at the time. Maybe you can take a moment in October to reconsider.

Denver Dynamic Dogs Examiner would be the last one to encourage a hasty decision. There are quite a few things to weigh in on your choice of pet, when and where you go to select one, when you and your family are ready to add a four-legged family member. Here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Is your home suitable for a dog?
  • Are others in your family willing or able to have a dog now?
  • Can you commit to veterinary care, grooming, excercising, and loving a dog for the rest of its life?
  • Do you know the dog breed(s) that best suit your lifestyle?
  • Does your vehicle suit the breed you want? (St. Bernards and sports coupes don't make a good match)

There are some resources on this page, but many more links will not fit here. If there is a certain breed you have your heart set on, send an email and I might be able to direct you to their rescue group.

Happy shopping, and may you enjoy your new companion for many years!
