Brown skin has been controversial since the beginning of time; it has had its fair share of trials and tribulations and truly survived the test of time. It has been welted and bruised by the whips of slave masters, dried and cracked by hard labor in cotton fields, bleached and washed out in desperate attempts to conform to society’s ideal images, yet still it’s radiance is overwhelmingly beautiful in a runway show.

As a young African American woman, I know all too well the ups and downs of trying to maintain healthy brown skin; it has been a long journey for all of us, no matter what age. I was introduced to a product that surely fills the void in black skin care.

Dr. Susan L. Taylor’s Rx for Brown skin was developed in the summer of 2007, it is the first ever skin care line for women of color that has been scientifically formulated by a dermatologist. This product is available at more than 100 Sephora locations across the United States. It has been specifically developed for brown skin of all shades and ethnicities, mainly because the skincare market is lacking products that cater to our specific needs. Many skin care regimens contain ingredients that have the potential to irritate and inflame our skin. Rx for Brown Skin has successfully F.L.A.P.D those entirely out for us. The line is free of

Fragrance
Lanolin
Alcohol
Propylene Glycol, and
Dye

When developing this line Dr. Taylor wanted a product that was well suited for sensitivity and that would also treat discoloration of the skin. There are three major concerns while dealing with brown skin: hyper pigmentation, or dark marks, sensitivity, and acne prone skin, this product addresses all of these and more.

Bright and Healthy- is for normal, dry, or sensible brown skin
Bright and Clear - is for acne prone, oily, combination or problem skin
Bright and Even- is for dull, uneven, mature or hyper pigmented brown skin

I haven’t  mentioned the Special Prescription products which protects the skin from sun damage, exfoliates to remove dark marks, and brightens the skin to make dark marks less visible. There are also an enumeration of body care products that have a natural citrus fragrance and anti-inflammatory properties.

During a phone interview this Friday Dr. Taylor and I both agreed that healthy skin begins at home, it is something that we must teach our children and make them aware of as early as adolescence; this is a very important time to teach our children good grooming habits.

At this age we should be: Cleansing twice a day with our fingertips or a small washcloth,
Moisturizing, and toning acne prone skin, Dr. Taylor says that “most kids don’t know the importance of cleaning their faces, let alone their teeth!” Young girls often mimic what their mothers do, so it’s important to have healthy grooming habits to set a good example. She says we must also understand and learn the importance of sunscreen to protect ourselves from burning in the sun.

When asked if these products would stand alone Dr. Taylor said that she wouldn’t discourage one from mixing and matching them, but when all the ingredients are layered, you’ll received the best results. Some items in the line that surely stand alone are: Absolute Radiance Serum, my personal favorite and the Naturally Flawless Brightener.

Seeing as how Rx for Brown Skin is both for men and women I hope I’ve made a good decision about what to ask for whom.

What is the safest way to treat ingrown hairs?
Plucking isn’t so good because it causes the hair to break and pierces the follicle, which causes the skin to become inflamed. Try and use a small mustache scissor to clip those hairs. Glycolic acid also helps with ingrown hairs, which is the main ingredient in Absolute Radiance; you should be using this 2-3 times a week. Laser treatment is another option; however you must be aware that not every laser is good for brown skin. Dr. Taylor recommends the following, the 1064ND: YAG long pulse laser, which is well suited for brown skin.

What should one consider while choosing makeup?
Know what ingredients are in the makeup; if your skin is oily make sure it doesn’t contain oil, if your skin is dry- you’re looking for a hydrator. Keep in mind the shades and undertones of your skin. It’s always good to step outside in the sunlight to see what the makeup looks like in the sun.

What are some things people have done to your skin that make you absolutely cringe? People put Clorox on their skin, toothpaste on their skin, people use harsh abrasives on their skin, some people don’t wash their faces at all- that makes me cringe.

To close it all out and bring things full circle, Dr. Taylor had this to say: “Our skin is the largest organ on the body. Most people do a great deal for their hearts, they make sure that their hair is styled and beautiful, but they often lose sight of their skin, and miss opportunities to improve it by not having a skin regimen, which is when they come to see me.”
