Funny man Chris Rock has written and co-produced a film entitled “Good Hair”, an HBO Films Production that has already received A Special Jury Prize: U.S. Documentary at the Sundance Film Festival 2009. The idea came to him when his daughter Lola ran up to him crying, asking him why her hair wasn’t “good”. The documentary entitled, “Good Hair”,directed by Jeff Stilson is about to hit the big screen, as the rights to the documentary have been acquired by Roadside Attractions and Liddell Entertainment.
The film explores the many different ways in which “hairstyles affect the activities, pocketbooks, sexual relationships and self esteem of black people”. It contains a whole host of celebrities from Maya Angelou to Raven Symone to Rev. Al Sharpton, who has had his fair share of hair ups and downs!
I am especially brought back to Spike Lee’s 1988 film School Daze, where Lawrence Fishburne, Tisha Campell, Jasmine Guy, and a few other young actors and actresses played students at a Historically Black College who went at each other’s throats daily about political issues, body image, straight versus natural hair, and light and dark skin. Sadly, some of these issues seem as if they will never be put to rest, any ideas on why this rings true?
