Washington D.C., our nation’s capital represents almost every nationality and ethnicity known to man. A hidden treasure within this bustling city is the go-go music scene, a genre of funk that is heavily focused on percussion instruments. I was first exposed to this music during my freshman year of college, it is- which most kids in my dorm explained to me “black rock music”.

I fell in love with the mystery of how this music came about and am extremely excited about the Premier in New York City on April 30th of a film entitled, “Jazz in the Diamond District”, an urban drama Directed by Lindsey Christian and written by  Sia Tiambi Barnes and Lindsey Christian which tells the story of a young woman, Jasmine “Jazz” Morgan, played by Monique Cameron, making her first film debut; who decides against going to college, and instead wants to pursue a musical career amidst the backdrop of the underground music scene in D.C.

The film features D.C.’s own Clifton Powell who plays Jasmine’s father, a doctor, totally against her decision to pursue a music career and “The Wire’s “Wood Harris, who stars in the film as Gabriel Marx, the manager of a popular D.C. go-go band. This film is SoBlu Productions’ debut film. It also marks the big screen debut of Erica Chamblee, “Leah Morgan” who plays Jazz’s younger sister and Andre’ Strong “Flight” Gabes best friend, all D.C. natives who attended Duke Ellington School of the Arts. It most certainly has a down home feel to it seeing how the production company was founded by two sisters, Lindsey Christian and Erica Chamblee with a purpose of inspiring and promoting the life and art of Washington, D. C.

It has made quite a name for itself already, as it was selected for the 20008 D.C. International Film Festival in addition to the 2008 Urban World film festival. Its first single “Red Carpet” from the soundtrack had its music video premiered on BET.com last month. Besides a really good sound the film was shot completely in high definition.

The soundtrack and score feature an enumeration of D.C. artists and was co produced by Chucky Thompson and up-and-coming producer, Maurice “Mo Digga” Randolph. A few of the premiers will be immediately followed by a concert featuring the soundtrack artists which is indeed a double treat. This film and its music are certainly full of new surprises.
