The term “big government” continues to be front and center on the political table. Pun intended – here’s some food for thought. Conservatives say “big government” consists of a lot of rules and regulations we don’t really need. They say it’s squashing our freedom and ability to grow our Capitalist economy.

Referring to our financial meltdown, former Alaska Governor, Sarah Palin said, “We got into this mess because of government interference in the first place. We're not interested in government fixes, we're interested in freedom.”

It is unclear which government interference Palin is referring to – the government bail out money taxpayers gave to the banks? Or the unregulated, Wall Street mortgage-market crapshoot - that lead to the government bail out money taxpayers gave to the banks?

And freedom has different meanings for different people. For the average person, “big government” does not effect daily life as much as small government can. Ever been hassled by the county or city over something really stupid? Wrong color mail box? Not the right type of gutters on the house? Need a permit to run an extension cord from the house to the garage on Tuesdays, unless you’re standing on your left foot and hoping up and down?

We need never forget that it was a lack of rules and regulations that saddled us with enough bail out debt to keep taxpayers paying until our grandchildren on ready to retire.

If you ask your neighbor – What is the first government regulation you would eliminate that would make your life better? It is highly unlikely they would reply, “Let’s repeal the clean air act.”

Blaming all our economic problems on big government may fool some of the people some of the time, but it does not change the fact that how life is perceived in Washington, is not the same as how it is lived in the real world. How Sarah Palin perceives anything is the puzzle of the ages.
