As a parent, I was wondering who may have invented the sleepover. During the summer months my children get several offers from friends to sleep-over. Why a sleepover? I ask. (As if the kids’ lives are not fun enough, they need to prolong the fun into the wee hours of the morning; depriving themselves of the much needed sleep to get through the next day). My views on the sleep-over probably put me in the minority; as most parents likely jump at the chance to have their kid(s) away for the night.
While my son loves going to his friends for a night of out of control fun, it really ruins his energy level for the following few days. During the school year, if my son sleeps out on a Saturday night; the following week at school is very sluggish. Sometimes an illness will work its way into the mix causing a school absence and a re-arranged work schedule for his parents.
I am a proponent of the sleep-over ban. I am sure that some parents would be upset at such a suggestion. One of my friend’s suggested that we permit a designated number of sleep-overs for the school year; while another suggestion was to allow the sleep-over but only during a holiday weekend or over the summer months so that the children can have time to recover and re-energize.
