I did not know much about toxic shock syndrome until a dear friend of mine almost lost her battle with it recently. After experiencing it with my friend and discussing it with others, I realized that so many cases exist.

According to WebMD, toxic shock syndrome is a rare, often life-threatening illness that develops suddenly after an infection and can rapidly affect several different organ systems. Furthermore, the prolonged use of a tampon, especially the super absorbent type, increases a woman’s risk of menstrual TSS.

It is important for parents to discuss with their teen daughters, the importance of changing their tampons regularly. In my friend’s case, her delay was almost fatal.   Surprisingly, many people I spoke to about the situation were aware of someone who had suffered from TSS during high school or college.

Suggestions received to avoid TSS include: refrain from use of tampons over-night; and use all-cotton tampons only.
