If UNM soccer star Elizaebeth Lambert had been charged in Metropolitan court with misdemeanor battery, she probably would have been put in the early intervention program. She would get counseling and have to do some community service. She would also have to refrain from alcohol for the duration and have no other incidents. If she successfully completed the program, her charges would be dropped.
The story made national news along with the inevitable jokes. A commentator on Fox joked that UNM's football players needed to be as tough as Elizabeth Lambert, as the Lobos were getting crushed by Utah. Other stations followed suit.
Perhaps he read that joke right here in the column.
It is also notable that the commentator confused UNM with New Mexico State. If all publicity is good publicity, UNM fans might be happy to let the Aggies take the credit for this one.
Something tells me that pro players will NOT emulate Ms. Lambert. Troy Polamalu the USC and Steeler great -- single-handedly started the trend of long hair on football players. His hair was pulled...once....
I don't know if this was an isolated incident with Ms. Lambert. If there is more going on in her life, I do hope she does get counseling if warranted. For her community service, she might try to repair UNM's reputation.
