There is something different about this shooting at Fort Hood, the worst shooting at American military base in history. A soldier opened fire on a military processing center at Fort Hood in Texas on Thursday, killing 12 people and wounding 31. He was CAPTURED by emergency personnel. This is a tragedy, in a long line of tragedies.
The shooter Nidal Malik Hasan is a Virginia native and a graduate of Virginia Tech. By coincidence, one of the last major American shootings was done by Seung Hi Cho, also a Hokie. Like Cho, Hasan had left clues – he was single, made postings on the internet, and on the radar, but never incarcerated.
What is different, and truly disturbing was that Hasan worked as a practicing psychiatrist, supposedly there to help several thousand of our finest soldiers at Ft. Hood.
The only apparent motive was an upcoming deployment to Iraq "and appeared to be upset about that," according to Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison, R-Texas. “I think that there is a lot of investigation going on now into his background and what he was doing that was not known before," Hutchison said.
Even more ironic, according to the New York Times, Hasan once worked as a “Fellow, Disaster and Preventive Psychiatry, Department of Psychiatry, F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine, Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences.”
He received a poor performance evaluation at Walter Reed. He has made internet postings about suicide bombings which had raised eyebrows. He allegedly posted that a suicide bombing would save the lives of Muslims overseas. Although he has an Arab name, he did not put down any religious preference.
Hasan made statements opposing the war, but there was no indication to relatives that he would become violent. He has no combat experience, or post traumatic stress disorder from that. Although he did come into contact with soldiers at Walter Reed who had served, so he knew what he would be facing.
This is another story that I will be following closely and will update you as details become available.
There is one question I still need to know...Why?
