It's been a week since the name Brett Favre was written in this space. I recognize that that isn't very long by most standards, but we are in uncharted waters with the Favre un-retirement story, and to go a week without some story about whether or not he is going to stay retired or play for the Minnesota Vikings in 2009 is tantamount to a news blackout.

No such Favre embargo here. The latest news (and we use that term loosely) is that Vikings coach Brad Childress is heading back from his fishing trip to Alaska, where he presumably con-fabbed with his former head coach at the Philadelphia Eagles, Andy Reid, and probably wondered aloud whether all the Favre falderal was worth it. We don't know that for sure, but it is fun to speculate.
It has also been speculated that an actual announcement about Favre signing a contract with the Vikings will happen this week or weekend to coincide with the national holiday and thus catch the media unawares or at least distracted by all the fireworks exploding in the sky. The presumption is that since single-game tickets sales for the Vikings begin on July 20th, the team would like to carry the momentum from announcing the Favre signing over to the on-sale date in hopes of selling out the Vikings home games this season.
As a former staff member of a professional sports franchise (Minnesota Timberwolves), it is hard to argue with that theory--we always wanted to capitalize on any opportunity in the marketplace to sell tickets. It doesn't get any bigger than an announcement of the former Packer QB heading across the St. Croix River to play for the Purple.
But what about this story thus far has taken place conventionally? Everyone involved seems to be making it up as they go along--particularly the media, which has thrown out numerous scenarios, some with validity and others, ostensibly, to see who was paying attention. Besides, now we are told that Favre may be looking for a big pay day. I have to believe that it will ultimately come down to the health of Favre's throwing arm rather than how healthy of a paycheck he wants as to whether this gets done or not. The Vikings have the cap room and the need, and Favre has the desire to play and the desire to show his former employer he can. Favre will certainly get paid and paid well, but the Vikings won't mortgage the farm on recently injured 39-year-old quarterback . . . maybe just the back 40 acres.
Well, you've been brought up to date on the latest Brett Favre news if you have been starving for some. (Chances are good that you have not been, however.) But let us Vikings fans (those who want this transaction to happen) hope that Childress won't land his biggest catch until he returns to Minnesota and gets Favre to sign on the dotted line. Then let the fireworks begin.
