Recovering from a flash flood on August 4th, the Kentucky Derby Museum is undergoing a $5.5 million renovation. The museum is presently closed, with a grand reopening scheduled for mid-April of 2010.
The unveiling will be titled, “Share the Fun of the Kentucky Derby Experience.” Several high-tech interactive exhibits are expected to entertain and educate horse racing enthusiasts visiting the Kentucky Derby Museum.
Many exhibits, horse racing artifacts and Kentucky Derby archives were destroyed by the late summer flood, which swept through the Lexington, Kentucky area. Basically, the entire first floor and lower levels were damaged by a combination of flood waters and sewer backups. Several Kentucky Derby Museum staffers and volunteers cooperated to save as many items as possible during the storm.
