For those of us looking for a low-key New Year's Eve celebration, what better way than to read a book and make a snack before settling in front of the TV to wait for the ball to drop? Here's a few ideas for a fun, family friendly New Year's:

Books:
Happy New Year Everywhere by Arlene Erlbach--The author shares traditional customs and traditions of celebrating the New Year from 20 different countries. Different cultures may celebrate the New Year using different calendars and holiday names. Each section highlights a different county, the date(s) of their New Year observance, the name of their New Year holiday as well as a traditional greeting, a related game, recipe, song or craft. There is a world map that pinpoints each country that is being discussed. Colorful line art accompanies the projects.
P. Bear's New Year's Party! by Paul Owen Lewis--P. Bear's New Year's Party is a fun counting book. Numbers are displayed in quantities, in a clock, in words and their varieties. The characters are entertaining for the younger children.

Snacks:
Confetti Popcorn Balls

4 cups popcorn, popped
1 cup multicolored gumdrops, chopped
1/2 cup peanuts, chopped
3 cups miniature marshmallows
3 tbsp margarine
Spray large bowl with vegetable spray. Combine popcorn, gumdrops and peanuts in bowl. Combine marshmallows and margarine in large saucepan and melt over medium heat, stirring constantly. Pour marshmallow mixture over popcorn, candy, and nuts, toss until coated. With buttered hands, shape popcorn mixture into 8 balls. Work quickly to shape balls before mixture cools and hardens. Allow to set until serving time.

Variation: Use Gummy Bears, M&M's, small fruit snacks, or other colorful additives instead of gumdrops.
