Today is Children's Day (read here for an interesting article regarding Children's Day). But since there's no big Hallmark marketing scheme attached to it, no catchy slogan, or no sales, it's easy to let the day pass by. Not only do we tend to take the kids in our lives for granted, there's so much focus on how kids negatively impact our lives (lack of sleep, they're expensive, you sacrifice "me" time, etc) that people forget to focus on the positive impact kids have on our adult lives. Children's Day gives an us chance appreciate our children and all of the good things they give us.
The first thing that kids give us is a chance to stop being adults and act like kids. When you're drawing a picture or blowing bubbles or swinging on a swing, are you really thinking about the bills you have to pay or the laundry that needs to be folded? I'm not. I'm focused on being in the moment and having fun. It's nice to forget about the stress of being an adult. I would not be doing that if it weren't for my daughter.
Kids remind us to appreciate the world around us. Their fascination with the details of nature is incredible. There is nothing like taking a walk with a small child to remind you that the world is not just cell phones and buildings.
But my favorite thing about kids is their ability to laugh shamelessly, heartily, and genuinely at anything they find funny. My daughter will belly laugh for hours on end at our dogs, she'll giggle endlessly when my husband tickles her feet, and she'll fall into hysterics when I dance with her...the only time I laugh like that is when I'm watching "The Office".
I know that every day I tell my daughter that I love her; days like today remind me to tell her how much I appreciate her. So spread the word and celebrate Children's Day!
