I've been communicating with you recently about local school board elections.  The results are in and it's time to let them sink in and, as parents, decide how to respond.

First, in Jefferson County, I believe charter schools have a huge win with Laura Boggs.  She was clearly the underdog with regards to her far better funded rival and incumbent.  Congratulations to Ms. Boggs as she begins to lead in JeffCo!

In Douglas County it was a rather earth shattering night.  The teachers union was sent a message with the defeat of their candidates.  The four candidates endorsed by Parents for School Choice, John Carson, Doug Benevento, Dan Gerken, and Meghann Silverthorn, won their races with significant margins.  DCSD can look forward to a school board that will work hard to further the education of ALL children, while supporting the finest teachers, and being accountable to the taxpayers.

Denver Public Schools is a different story, where the results were mixed.  Two of the three candidates endorsed by the union were victorious, possibly signaling a step backwards for school reform.  The bright spot from last night is the win by Mary Seawell, who won in a landslide over openly anti-charter school candidate Christopher Scott.  Congratulations to Ms. Seawell.

If you are a parent in DPS, particularly a charter school parent or one who is waiting for enrollment in a charter, what does this mean for you and what can you do now?  Please don't despair!  This is a call for action and advocacy on your part as parents.  Let these board members know that you are watching their performance.  Communicate with them; talk with them about the issues that are important to you; attend school board meetings; let your voice be heard.

As parents we are all ultimately responsible for the education our children receive.  We must be engaged and involved in our schools and in the political systems supporting them.
