With Thanksgiving Day just around the corner, take advantage of the learning experience that you can create with your child. Several days this week, I will give some quick history facts and an easy craft or activity that I am sure you and your child will just love!

We all know that Thanksgiving takes place on the fourth Thursday in November (at least in the U.S.; Canada’s is the second Monday in October), but did you know that the Indians, not the pilgrims, were the ones to actually begin the tradition? When we think about Thanksgiving, we tend to remember the Indians and pilgrims coming together for a big feast in 1621. It was actually a celebration and a way of giving thanks for the autumn harvest, a celebration that the Indians had been practicing for centuries.
So, in light of the meaning behind Thanksgiving, here is a craft that will help you and your child get into the Thanksgiving Spirit.
Materials needed for A Turkey of Thanks:
Printer
Paper (I like Construction Paper in red, orange, and brown, but you can use plain white paper and have your child color it)
Something to color with
Glue Stick
Scissors
Using DLTK's directions and template, put together your turkey of thanks. It is an easy, fun, inexpensive craft to share with your little one and help prepare her for the upcoming feast. I did this craft with my older kids, ages 4-8, but I don’t recommend this for the tiny ones (unless you want to do all the cutting and putting together yourself). In addition, I would change your printer setting to 150%; the pieces were a bit small, and enlarging it would make it easier to cut.
Be sure to check back this week for more facts and activities that I am sure your little turkeys will gobble, gobble, gobble!
