It happens to everyone. You receive an unexpected gift from a co-worker. Now, you want to return the gesture, but you have very little time to come up with something. What to do?
I know it seems impersonal, but a gift card really is a great way to go. For teachers, you can give a $5 gift card to Starbucks, Einstein Bros. Bagels, Panera, or a fast food restaurant you know he or she likes. Even that small gesture will brighten someone's day.
For co-workers, you might up the ante to $10 or more toward dinner at Outback Steakhouse, one of the Pappas restaurants, or Chili's. Movie theater gift cards are also a great gift.
Don't believe the hype about avoiding gift cards for Christmas this year. As long as you avoid cards for Circuit City or Linens N Things and keep an eye out for "Going out of business" signs, you should be safe. Most of the major chains will still be in business after Christmas.
Also remember that you no longer have to go to the cafe, restaurant or movie theater to get the gift cards. Randall's, Walgreens, and some other grocery stores now sell a wide variety of gift cards, and Randall's is currently offering bonus fuel points for gift card purchases.
