A driver was killed on the Bay Bridge Monday morning when his truck went over the bridge and plunged 200 feet to the ground while navigating the S curve on Yerba Buena Island.
Caltrans’ official policy is that this accident and the dozens of others that have happened in the same spot are the result of speeding.
Bart Ney is a spokesman for Caltrans. He says: “The problem is speed. There have been 12 million safe trips over the Bay Bridge S-curve.”
The S-curve opened after the Labor Day weekend this year.
In an attempt to combat speeders, Caltrans will be installing reflective stripes to the guard rails at the S-curve and ‘reduced speed ahead’ warning signs to help inform drivers of the curve.
The S-curve is a temporary fixture on the Bay Bridge as a way to make room for other construction.
This accident comes shortly after the bridge was unexpectedly closed for emergency repairs to yet another fix that went in over the Labor Day holiday.
