Hunters and Jumpers usually show together at one show but the two disciplines are far from the same.
In the hunter discipline, the horse should have excellent temperament, manners, willingness, and soundness. Conformation to some extent is important and quality of looks. The entry should also have good movement, way of going, long stride, and little knee movement. The jumping round should exhibit great jumping form, evenness of pace, consistency of distances, and a correct bascule. The rider should be suitable to his/her mount.
When riding In the jumper discipline the emphasis is on clean rounds rather than what the horse looks like or his jumping style. In fact, clear rounds and speed are the only things that matter in the Jumper ring. Faults are given for exceeding the time limit, refusals, runouts, knocking a rail down or falls. A clean, clear round is obtained when your score is free of faults. Sometimes all of the entries obtain faults. The winner in this case has the least amount of faults with the fastest time during their round.
