Pam Taylor hopes to fight cancer, one free throw at a time. She won't be alone, either. Taylor, the Franklin Central girls basketball coach, will be joining other coaches, varsity players and students throughout the Franklin Central athletic system on Saturday, January 31, 2009, to raise money by shooting free throws. Each player and coach participating in the event hopes to shoot 100 free throws apiece, raising money by securing donations from family and friends. Taylor hopes to raise $2,500. The proceeds will benefit pediatric cancer research at the Riley Hospital for Children.
Coach Taylor, a breast cancer survivor, was inspired to hold the event by the story of a 10 year old who attends Taylor's church, and is also in the midst of fighting a cancer battle of her own. The 10 year old's family, The Whittemores, will speak at the beginning of the event, in hopes of raising awareness about pediatric cancer and what can be done to support research and treatment. Taylor hopes that by meeting a young girl with cancer, the students and players will become more comfortable with cancer patients, and even be inspired to help themselves.
Taylor is not alone in her quest to make the night a success. With the help of a local Franklin Township resident, Joe Schulz, the Franklin Central players will receive pink shirts and pink hair bows in an effort to raise cancer awareness.
Taylor hopes this event will become an annual one, and that she will be around for many more years to participate.
