It’s amazing what one little penny can do, especially in today’s economic market. But students at Eman Elementary and Middle School didn’t let any financial woes keep them from engaging in a bit of friendly competition to show the power of their pennies.
During November, the students raised money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation by engaging in a 5-day penny competition, which pitted the elementary school against the middle school. When the contest ended, the middle school students donated the most coins, however most students felt they had all won, because they raised $584.
The money was then delivered to local radio station WZPL to contribute to their “Request-a-thon” event, held November 20-21.
The school teaches the value and importance of giving and helping, because, as one student stated, that whatever he gives now, he will get in return when his need arises.
This year, the school has raised money for Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Make-A-Wish, collected food for a food-drive, and helped purchase livestock for African families through Heifer International.
The next fundraiser may be geared towards juvenile arthritis, as one of the students at Eman currently struggles with that illness.
The students helped send one girl to Disney World. Meeting the girl in person helped to solidify that anyone might need help at any given moment…even if it’s just one penny at a time.
