Trailer removed. Too slow.
Lionsgate just got to this trailer, but poke around YouTube, it might pop up again.

UPDATE: And just like that, Lionsgate has pulled the trailer.  If you really want to see it, I'm sure it's still floating around, but I'm sure the final cut of the trailer is right around the bend.  I give it one month, two months max before it shows up on Yahoo or Apple.  It could even be as soon as a couple of weeks.

The original article is below, with an appropriate correction.

Here is your first clear look at Sylvester Stallone's The Expendables.  It's clearly a rough cut of a trailer that got leaked onto YouTube - temporary graphics, basic fonts, runs over three minutes - so jump on it before Millenium Films Lionsgate does.

What you're seeing is exactly what I expected from this movie: dialogue's more than a little on the nose, the acting's pretty rough around the edges, and the action looks like a return to the simplicity of the 80s with a few modern tweaks (like that second-long shot of Stallone on the movie, shot at a lower framerate to give it that gritty, sped-up look that was popularized in Saving Private Ryan and Gladiator).  It's also looking fun and quotable in almost the same way Total Recall and Demolition Man were fun and quotable.

  • "He's saying we're dead with an accent!"
  • "Who sent you?"  "Your hairdresser!"
  • "Bring it, Happy Feet!"

Whether you're rolling your eyes or licking your lips, know that I'm not sure I'd have a movie with Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Terry Crews, Randy Couture, Steve Austin, Eric Roberts, Mickey Rourke, and Charisma Carpenter any other way.  Maybe I'm being an apologist here, but as imperfect as this looks, I'll be darned if this doesn't have some serious personality.

Personality borrowed from Regan-era action cinema, sure, but it's a personality we haven't seen for far too long.

Wanna learn more about The ExpendablesUnit publicist Sheryl Main has been dillegently stirring up some buzz with behind-the-scenes info right over here.  Read through and never hear the phrase "That's how you teach the children" in the same way again.  (WARNING: MILD SPOILERS.)

MIchael's Star Scale

  • 0 Stars - Disgusting, rage-inducingly evil. Deserves the same fate as the busted printer in Office Space (click) (NSFW, language)
  • 1/2* - There may be one tiny thing in this piece of drek to be appreciated, but you'd have to be really bored to go looking for it.
  • * - Awful. Could possibly get some enjoyment out of it by getting drunk and making fun of the movie with friends.
  • *1/2 - Barely vital. Shows promise but ultimately not worth your time.
  • ** - Mediocre. A non-starter.
  • **1/2 - Some good to be found here, but bogged down in a lot of bad.
  • *** - A cautious recommendation. Plenty wrong with it, but buoyed by enough good to make it work for me.
  • ***1/2 - A solid, if flawed movie. Very much worth your time.
  • **** - Highly recommended. Does what it sets out to do with expert precision.
  • ****1/2 - A must see. Expertly conceived and executed with few hitches.
  • ***** - Perfect or damn near. I would be floored to meet someone who did not like this movie.
