Lupus is a chronic, autoimmune disease that can affect any part of the body. Lupus can damage the heart, lungs, skin, kidneys, any organ in the body or joints. Chronic means that the symptoms you experience last longer than six weeks. Lupus affects the immune system which is an important part of your body that protects you from illnesses like flu's, viruses, etc. Your immune system produces antibodies, which are proteins, that protect the body from invaders. When you have an autoimmune disease like Lupus your body does not know the difference between healthy tissue and invaders. Your body produces autoantibodies that attack and destroy invaders and healthy tissue.
"It is estimated that there are 1.5 million Americans who have Lupus (lupus.org)." Lupus is not contagious, goes from flares (when symptoms are present and you feel ill) to remission (where you feel well again). It ranges from mild to life-threatening. There is no cure for Lupus currently and your help is needed in raising awareness and funds to find a cure.
Lupus strikes mostly women but men, women, and children are also at risk of developing Lupus.
