A new study from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine suggests that kids who watch more t.v. during their teen years are at a higher risk for depression. The study asked 4,100 kids what their “media habits” were (which included television, computer, video games, etc.) each day. When the researchers followed up with the group seven years later, they found that a little over 7% of the subjects had developed symptoms of depression, with young men at a higher likelihood to develop it than women.
Reasons why television could up your child’s chances of developing depression? Time spent watching television replaces time spent doing social or intellectual activities, which can protect against depression. Television at night may disrupt sleep, while messaging can contribute to “risky” behavior, among other things.
