When purchasing a new car, most people pick up guides such as Consumer Reports to gain a better idea of what's available. They may also go on the Web to take a look at the various models available. But the key to getting the best deal on a car is to take advantage of additional resources on the Web.

After you've done a thorough review and narrowed down your selection to a couple of vehicles, it's important to use the Request a Quote feature that the major automobile companies provide on their Web sites. These tools enable you to build the car that you want, including features and color. Once this step is complete, you can then select a dealer to provide you with a quote. The important part is to select a dealer, submit the information, and then go back on your browser to select another dealer. The goal is to submit your information to several dealers in your area in order to receive several quotes.

You can repeat this process for each make and model that you're considering. Keep in mind that you will receive legitimate quotes from several dealers. Make sure the quotes include the delivery charge, otherwise this can add several hundred to the cost. Another thing to be aware of is that some dealers won't send you a quote but will bombard you with various offers to come in for a test drive. This is frustrating but it also allows you to eliminate dealers to visit. Do you want to go into the showroom of a place that is supposed to send you a quote but doesn't? It's something to consider.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the dealer most likely will not have the exact features or color you want in the car. But you will get a better idea of the cost and gain some ammunition when going in to haggle the price, if necessary. You also may get lucky and they have a match at the price they quoted.

Always read the fine print on the qoute as well. Some quotes expire within a certain timeframe. Others may not allow you to trade in a vehicle. Despite some of these drawbacks, the online quote available on these Web sites is a powerful tool for consumers. You'll be surprised at the price a dealer will offer you online as compared to just walking in to a showroom.
