I got a few great questions emailed to me over the last few days about winter skin, so thank you and keep those questions coming!

Dear Alex,

I get conflicting advice about how often I can bathe my dog. I have heard everything from twice a year to once a week, and even when I ask my groomer she sais, "its up to you"

-dirty doggy's daddy

Dear DDD

Essentially it is up to you how often you bathe your dog, the key to how often is based on a how dirty your dog gets , what type of coat he has and the quality of the products used for bathing. Show dogs who have long coats are bathed weekly with very high quality products that do not strip oil from the coat.  Wire coated breeds who are hand stripped are very rarely bathed (3-4 times a year)

Assuming your groomer used professionaly quality products, it is safe to bathe your dog weekly if he needs it. There is no reason to worry in the winter as long as a conditioner is used. I reccommend that housedogs be bathed no less than every 8 weeks and no more than once a week. If you are bathing with a store bought shampoo, limit your bathing to monthly to avoid overdrying and remember to brush your pet throroughly before and after a bath to keep matting to a minimum.

Dear Alex,

What is your favorite shampoo?  I have a Maltipoo.

-Jane

Dear Jane.

I only use Iv San Bernard, Mela Verde on my own poodles. They have a full line of coat specific shampoo and a range of show quality conditioners and detanglers.

Dear Alex,

My dog itches like crazy in the winter. What can I do to help her?

-Scratchy

Dear Scratchy,

Again, A good conditioner is a must during dry, cold weather. Besides conditioning the skin and coat from the outside, there are several good supplements that have omega-3 oil that help to build up your pets skin from the inside. Keeping your pet on a high quality diet is also very important. We love Missing Link Plus!
