A rare double-header of roller derby action will be taking place this Saturday, November 14th in San Jose as both of the Silicon Valley Roller Girls teams are taking on out-of-town opponents. The SVRG Dot.Kamikazes will be battling the Redwood Rollers of Humboldt Roller Derby and the SVRG Killabytes will be taking on the Undead Betty's of Contra Costa County.
The double-header, named "A Fight to Remember" starts at 5:30 pm at San Jose Skate located at 397 Blossom Hill Road in San Jose. Tickets are $10 in advance ($5 for kids) and $15 at the door ($10 for kids). Children under five years old get in for free. A portion of the proceeds will go to benefit Sacred Heart Community Service, a local organization that helps families and seeks to alleviate poverty in the South Bay.
First Bout
The Killabytes will be playing against the nearby Antioch-based team The Undead Bettys in the first bout of the evening. This is the first meeting as opponents, however, earlier this season several of the Killabytes skated with the Undead Betty's when they played against the Santa Cruz Derby Girls. Steffin' Razor, Postal Servix, Zootown Throwdown, Dirty Thirty, Aim de Kill, and Cyntax all donned an Undead Bettys uniform to help them bout against their local Santa Cruz rivals.
The Undead Bettys, being a relatively new team, are fresh off their very first win last month against Central Coast Roller Derby (144 - 114). Earlier on this year, they lost games to SINtral Valley Derby Girls (115 - 85) and the Santa Cruz Derby Girls secondary team, the Harbor Hellcats (174 - 98). As they are still in the building stages of their league, they've recruited a few players from the Santa Cruz Derby Girls to help fill out their roster for the evening.
The Killabytes are looking to notch their first win at home for the 2009 season. They have played just one game on their home turf this year when they lost a lopsided battle to the Sacred City Derby Girls secondary team, the Disciples (148 - 44). However, they have been very successful on the road as they have collected victories against Valley Fever Roller Derby (150 - 94), Ventura County Derby Darlin's Battalion of Skates (202 - 32), and the Santa Cruz Derby Girls Harbor Hellcats (122 - 108).

Second Bout
To close out the evening, The Dot.Kamikazes will face the Redwood Rollers, the primary travel team for Humboldt Roller Derby. Though the league has been around for some time, 2009 was the first season that the Redwood Rollers have competed against other leagues. They took on many teams away and at home and have amassed a respectable 6 - 2 record for the year. Their two losses came at the hands of two experienced WFTDA teams. They lost a bout to the Oakland Outlaws of the B.ay A.rea D.erby Girls (115 - 65) and they lost a bout to the Skatesaphrenics of Emerald City Roller Girls (106 - 58). Their six wins came from bouts against the Lava City Roller Dolls team the Cinder Kittens (109 - 74), Port City Roller Girls secondary team the Delta Sirens (95 - 64), the Angel City Derby Girls team the Rocket Queens (98 - 89), the Nor Cal Roller Girls (157 -51), and the Sonoma County Roller Derby secondary team the North Bay Bruisers (140 - 93).
While the Killabytes have been unlucky at home this year, the Dot.Kamikazes are undefeated at San Jose Skate in 2009. They have won matches against the Sac City Rollers (97 - 84), the San Francisco ShEvil Dead of the B.ay A.rea D.erby Girls (127 - 65), the Santa Cruz Derby Girls team the Boardwalk Bombshells (131 - 100), the Rocket Queens of Angel City Derby Girls (208 - 45), and the OC Roller Girls Orange Crushers (132 - 64). They won one game on the road when they beat the Ventura County Derby Darlin's primary team, The Vendolls (70 - 67). Their two losses this year were both suffered on the road. The Dot.Kamikazes lost to Central Coast Roller Derby (86 - 50) and recently lost to the Port City Roller Girls primary team The Rough and Ready Betties last month (98 - 90).
While Silicon Valley is known for having an enthusiastic home base, there may be more visiting team fans than usual in the crowd this weekend. Humboldt Roller Derby is expecting their largest on-the-road fan turnout for this bout.
