Here's today's dose of inspiration for Baltimore-area hikers and backpackers.

In the news:

The Raleigh-Durham News & Observer published a story today about a middle-aged couple who have thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail, thru-hiked the Pacific Crest Trail and cycled on a tandem from the Pacific coast to the Atlantic coast– all in the past three years. Karen Hertlein (47) and her husband Jim Hertlein (57) say they no longer keep track of how old they are and believe that this sense of agelessness has helped them tackle these feats.

Sales:

REI's fall sale is still going on through Oct. 18, and Hudson Trail Outfitters offers free shipping for online orders through tomorrow, Oct. 14.

Organized Outings:

  • The Maryland Outdoor Club is hosting its monthly social hour tonight at Red Robin in Columbia. It starts at 7pm and it is open to members and nonmembers who want to find out more about the club. Click here for more info.
  • The Potomac Appalachian Trail Club is hosting a vigorous 15-mile hike in the North District of Shenandoah National Park. Click here for more info.
