Ironman Arizona was held in Tempe, Arizona on November 22, 2009. The swim was held in the Tempe Town Lake, followed by a flat but open bike course, and a 3 loop run with gentle hills in Papago Park. The day started out 65 and cloudy, but it quickly warmed up to the 70’s and the sun came out.

Two men stayed at the front of the pack for the majority of the race. Jordan Rapp, born and raised in Brewster, NY started in triathlons at the NYTC Harriman Sprint Series Race in 2003 in the Harriman State Park, NY. Jordan was first at the Vancouver International and first at Ironman Canada this year. Jordan switched bikes this year and rode a 2010 Specialized S-Works Transition. Last year Jordan finished 3rd in Ironman Arizona. TJ Tollakson finished 32nd in 9:06 just last month in Kona. He has been looking for the stronger finishes and had them this year with a 14th in 4:12 at Ironman 70.3 New Orleans and a 10th in 4:12 at Timberman 70.3 TJ lives in Iowa and is on leave from his job as an industrial engineer at the Alcoa Aerospace Center.

Rapp won in record time of 8:13:35. He said after the race that he is using his winnings to take his fiance, Jill Savege, on a honeymoon after their wedding next weekend.

TJ Tollekson came in second in 8:20:22 with Torsten Abel close behind in 8:21:39. Torsten collapsed after the finish - just sheer exhaustion after a great race for him. He was thrilled to be interviewed by Greg Welch afterwards. He decided to get into triathlons after watching Greg race, so hanging out with his idol was very exciting. His girlfriend Leanda Cave was still out on the course as he was being interviewed. Torsten said he was cheering his ‘powerhorse’ fiance on! Richie Cunningham from Australia raced Clearwater 70.3 last week and now in his first Ironman finished 4th.

On the women’s side Leanda Cave led the race for a long time. Leanda is from the UK, but resides in both Tucson, AZ and Trowbridge UK. She won the Florida 70.3 and Escape from Alcatraz this year. Samantha McGlone, lives close by and is a crowd favorite. A Canadian Olympian, she was 5th in Ironman Kona in 9:30:28. She finished 3rd in Ironman Lake Placid, and a 2nd in the Ironman Hawaii 70.3. McGlone was out due to an injury but has come back in 2009 very strong, racing her way back to fitness.

McGlone took over the race at 8.3 miles of the marathon. Linsey Corbin moved into 2nd at 16 miles. Linsey received a 4 minute penalty which ended up putting her 4:28 behind 1st place. Leanda ended up 5 overall behind Kate Major in 3rd and Sara Gross in 4th.

New York was well represented at the race with 70+ racers starting. Four athletes traveled together from the Capital region. Tami Olheiser, Steve Becker, Johan Bosman and first timer Marie Bosman. Steve Becker finished the race in 10:11:32 - 188 overall. Johan Bosman finished in 10:41:09. Tami finished in 13:13:30 and Marie in 13:05:32 for 32nd in her age group.  We'll give them a little recovery time and then get the race reports.  Stay tuned.  Check on the athletes and results.  Send your race report to Kristen Hislop at hislopdesigns@hotmail.com.
