With the Tour d'France bicycle race getting underway today, it only seemed fair to mention that there are also people celebrating Independence Day on two wheels in Tempe, too. The difference is Arizonans are riding for a $1 discount on 4th of July menu items at Green, the New American Vegetarian restaurant in Tempe.

Chef Damon Brasch is cooking up a variety of traditional summer food including bratwursts, hot dogs & burgers, but with a twist - they are all animal product free! There will also be baked beans and roasted garlic corn, raffles and a variety of music.

For a restaurant and chef that pride themselves on freshness, their choice in entertainers today is amusing. Slack Babbath is one of the bands performing and if you like the music of Black Sabbbath, you'll like these guys. The Phoenix New Times calls them the "Valley's only Black Sabbath karaoke band"

The Phoenix Business Journal put Brasch and Green in the spotlight back in February. The menu draws on many ethnic influences, including American. For those wary about trying a vegan restaurant (or 4th of July BBQ) shold take comfort from Brasch's words to the Business Journal: "You might be surprised. This plant-based food can be very tasty."

Service begins at 2 p.m. Green is located at: 2240 N. Scottsdale Rd., Suite 8, in Tempe.

Same event, different angle: Check out Save animals this Independence Day by my fellow Phoenix Animal Welfare Exminainer for more information about this great event!
