Alwun House is a favorite arts venues among Valley locals. There's just something special, in a very positive way about this historic bungalow in one of Phoenix' oldest and more eclectic neighborhoods as well as the fabulous artists and performers it attracts that draws me back again and again. Alwun House is doing it again this Friday with Rhythm & Blues, the opening artists reception for painters John Avedisian and Linda Storey-London.

Avedisian and Storey-London have been part of the Valley's art scene since the 1980's. Their paintings have also been shown beyond the Valley in such far-flung locales as Tokyo, Moscow and Italy. Both are contemporary artists whose works manage to be both evocative and surreal. Avedisian's portraits, like the blues music that inspires them, have been noted for both daring and beautifully crafted. Storey-London refers to her painting style as 'magic realism' in which she expresses her vision of the world by combining natural elements into unique or unusual settings.

The opening artists reception is FREE and begins at 7 p.m. Hors d'oeuvres will be served and bluesman Walking Cane Mark will perform in the garden area.

The garden area at Alwun House is an amazing oasis in the city where patrons can socialize with each other and mingle with artists. The lush gardens and ponds provide sanctuary from Phoenix heat in the summer and is a dynamic backdrop for live performances. Best of all, Alwun House, located at 1204 E. Roosevelt St., is not part of any of the official First Fridays circuits, so the crowds are not overwhelming although still very healthy. If you go, you won't be sitting alone!

Avedisian's and Storey-London's show will continue through November 25, 2009. Alwun House is open for viewing Tuesdays through Fridays from Noon until 6 p.m.
