In the article Food Can Help win Peace in Iraq we saw some of the U.S. army's more recent humanitarian missions. But the U.S. armed forces have a long tradition in providing food to the hungry. Below are some video, documents and audio from the World War II era showing some of this storied history of the U.S. armed forces.
The first is video of food drops that the U.S. and Britain undertook over Nazi-occupied Holland at the end of World War II. Next are some documents from the U.S. military government in Austria about food aid with a special emphasis on school lunches for children. The short film Ending Child Hunger: School Lunches for Kids Around the World has footage of the U.S. Army school lunch program in Austria. In the post-World War II era the school lunch was very much a part of the U.S. military's arsenal, particularly in Austria and Germany.
To finish, there is audio of General Eisenhower talking about the terrible sight of child hunger that many World War II veterans witnessed. Former senators Robert Dole and George McGovern are two of these veterans and today they have a global child feeding program in their name. The McGovern-Dole Food for Education initiative is seeking to build a global school lunch program.
