Congressman Leonard L. Boswell of Iowa is the latest member of Congress to show support for the Roadmap to End Global Hunger legislation (H.R. 2817). There are now 26 members of Congress co-sponsoring the bill which was put forward by Rep. Jim McGovern of Massachusetts earlier this year.
The Roadmap to End Global Hunger would create a White House office to coordinate the U.S. response to the global food crisis. A new advisor would work with President Obama and oversee all U.S. agencies involved in fighting hunger. Worldwide there are over 1 bilion people who cannot get access to enough food. In countries like Afghanistan, Sudan, Iraq, Pakistan, and Nepal hunger and want threaten any hopes of peace.
Programs to increase food production in developing countries is key to solving the hunger crisis. Child feeding programs like school meals are also an essential component to end hunger and promote development.
Save the Children, Catholic Relief Services, Mercy Corps, the Friends of the World Food Program, and a coalition of charities made recommendations which formed the Roadmap legislation. The idea is to elevate global hunger to the top of the Obama adminstration's foreign policy agenda.
