Over 1 billion people now suffer from hunger worldwide. With World Food Day on October 16th, the United Nations World Food Programme has come up with a list of 10 ideas on how to get involved in the struggle to end hunger.
Here is the text of their press release:
ROME – World Food Day (October 16) offers an opportunity to learn more about hunger and to join the fight against it. Individuals can do a lot to help fight hunger simply by being informed and spreading the word.
If you want to do something to help on World Food Day, try a few of the options below.
1 Do the Hunger Quiz
Make sure you're up-to-speed on the issues by taking the Hunger Quiz at the bottom of this page. If you know the answers to these 10 questions, you're ready to explain 'hunger basics' to others.
2 Become a WFP Facebook fan
Are you on Facebook? Go to our page and become a fan. It’s another way of keeping up-to-date on the issues and showing your support.
3 Tweet hunger facts to friends
Use Twitter to send the three facts you see to the right to a few friends. You’re already helping inform the world about hunger.
4 Put a photo on the ‘Wall’
If you want a cool gift for a loved one, think about this: honour them by making a donation and putting their picture on our Wall Against Hunger.
5 Play FreeRice online game
Go to FreeRice.com and play the popular quiz game. For every right answer, 10 grains of rice go to the hungry. It’s the advertisers who pay, not you.
6 Play Food Force game
Download this compelling computer game, which means you take part in a simulation of WFP’s life-saving work. Pass the link on to kids who may like it.
7 Get 'On the road' with WFP
Check out our On the road video blog. It'll show you what's involved in fighting hunger worldwide and help you understand why WFP does what it does.
8 Make a video about hunger
A budding film-maker? Make a ‘short’ video about hunger and enter our Hungerbytes competition. Prizes include a trip to the frontlines of hunger.
9 Make a meal with a dollar
Want something offline? How about cooking a meal for less than US$1. Invite your friends to join you, but tell them more than a billion people do this every day.
10 Tell a teacher about wfp.org
We would love to see hunger issues talked about more in school. Download some suggested lesson plans from wfp.org/students-and-teachers and pass them on to a teacher you know.
