Traveling is great. You experience new things, taste new foods and generally get to know a new place in just a matter of days. It’s a different story when you live in a place for a while. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve said the words “I’ve been meaning to do/see/try that, but just haven’t gotten around to it yet.” It’s shameful, but we all do it. And even if a day at the Shedd or a ride on one of those bus tours doesn’t make it onto your calendar in the next year or two, here’s one hometown tour you can bet is going to become a priority. It’s the Chicago Chocolate Tour, and yes, it’s exactly what it sounds like. Valerie Beck, the "Chief Executive Chocolate Lover," began the tour company back in 2005 after shopping for the perfect box of bon bons for her mother and realizing just how many specialty chocolate shops exist in our windy city. After a successful test-run of guiding some out-of-town friends through her favorite chocolate shops, her new tour company was born. And according to Valerie (and her tourists), "it's the sweetest tour in Chicago." As a person who lets the intensity of the aroma wafting from Blommers in the morning determine the course of her day, this is a business plan I can get behind. .jpg)
As tourist-for-a-day, you can choose from several different tour routes (all about 2 1/2 hours). You'll be guided through various chocolate shops and treated to some of the most scrumptious treats the city has to offer while you listen to fun facts that you never knew you didn't know from your guide. And if you choose to do a walking tour, you get the bonus of working off the calories between stops. It's a win-win.
Chicago Chocolate Tours also does private tours as well as chocolate tastings if you just aren't feeling the three available standard routes. You can expect to join a group of 10-15 people on any of the tours, but private groups can accomodate up to 100 people. Either way, it's a great way to show an out-of-town guest a different side of the city or fulfill an afternoon sweet tooth.
