In one of the greatest college football scenes in recent history Bobby Bowden walked out arm in arm with his team before Saturday night's game against Georgia Tech.
It was at the suggestion of linebacker and team captain Dekoda Watson. After last week's public statement for a Bowden retirement at the end of the season by FSU board of trustees chairman Jim Smith, the team wanted to make a statement. Watson said, "You aren't going to come into our house, or nobody on the outside is going to come in, and try to mess up our home. You're not going to come in here and try to disrespect Coach Bowden and the team. That's just a statement to anybody out there hating on us and trying to get Coach Bowden out of here."
Scrutiny still remains high within the press after Smith's comments, but not among the players or the fans. In fact, a Facebook internet campaign for a "black-out" was attempted for the game where fans were directed to wear black to send a statement to the administration that something "drastic needed to be done...so that we do not become like Duke." According to Yahoo Sports, less than 1,000 of the 75,000+ in attendance wore black.
Is this the Florida State that fans were accustomed to seeing in the 90's or even in recent history? No. But who in major college football has not had a bad year. It's been since 1976 since Bowden has had a losing season. Should he be held accountable for this season and evaluated fairly like any other coach? Yes, but out of the press (Jim Smith, you're a disgrace) and at the end of the season.
Which there is plenty of it left. Four of the first six opponents are ranked. None of the next five are.
The next five games should be won by the Seminoles-- North Carolina State, North Carolina, Clemson, Wake Forest, and Maryland. Wake is the only team that has a winning record both in conference and overall. The rest are under .500 in one or both areas.
They'll be 7-4 going into Florida and riding high on momentum. Who knows what could happen at that point.
Evaluate Coach Bowden at the end of the season.
Period.
