is in the business of providing affordable treatment for people suffering from alcohol and/or drug addiction. Ten years ago, Hazelden executive John Curtiss was frustrated by the mounting costs of treatment. Curtiss joined a group of people who decided to start the Retreat, a non-clinical residential program for drug addicts and alcoholics. The Retreat includes a 30-day program, family and evening programs, and operates three long-term care facilities in St. Paul.
Rather than using psychiatric and pharmaceutical methods, The Retreat’s programs are based on the principles of Alcoholics Anonymous. In addition, hundreds of volunteers work as “sponsors”, speakers and assist in many areas of the program. The Retreat’s results in terms of long-term sobriety after treatment are comparable to those of larger facilities like Hazelden or Betty Ford. Yet costs for residents are often half what a comparable treatment would cost. Long-term care is provided for only $450 per month, given that residents meet certain requirements.
The Retreat is an affordable alternative to traditional treatment, and one that many have chosen after multiple prior treatments have failed. It’s another Minnesota “business” working to improve the lives of people in Minnesota and the rest of the world.
