It might be a little hard in the business world right now to feel thankful. But there are some organizations in Minnesota to which we really do owe a debt of gratitude. CaringBridge is certainly one of them.
If you’ve had a family member or friend suffer from a major illness I’m sure you’re familiar with the CaringBridge website. The free site allows people to set up web pages for their loved one and make updates on their progress. Plus people can leave comments of encouragement and support for the patient. I used it for my friend Barry when he underwent a liver transplant this summer and it was, pure and simple, a gift.
In 1997 Minnesotan Sona Mehring, whose background was in technology, started a website as a way to update others on the status of her friend’s life-threatening pregnancy and the eventual premature delivery of her baby. Although the story had a sad ending, a memorial fund in the name of baby Brighid started what is now the largest charitable non-profit (.org) website in the world. CaringBridge has had more than 750 million visitors from 190 different countries in the past 11 years. And it’s completely supported through donations. There is never an ad to be seen on the site.
Thanks, Sona Mehring, for a good idea that has turned into a life-changing tool for more than 20 million families worldwide.
