Dear Kit,
It's almost Father's Day and - once again - I have no idea what to give my dad. Anything he wants, he buys for himself!
He is into food, though he doesn't spend that much time in the kitchen himself. Any ideas? Thanks!
- Desperately Seeking Father's Day Ideas
Dear DSFDI,
I feel your pain. I mean, I really do. My own poor father has received way more cheesy sailing-related tchotchkes (how many coasters does one man need?) and more books he's already read and DVDs he'll never watch than any one person should in a lifetime. Dads are hard to buy for.
Hard, but not impossible.
First up, you don't mention where you and your dad live, but if he's in Anne Arundel County, you might think about entering him in the Punk's Backyard Grill "Best Dad" contest. First prize is a Father's Day backyard BBQ, catered by Punk's, at your dad's house and second prize is a $50 Punk's gift certificate. To enter, all you have to do is write a short essay about why your dad should be the winner.
Not much of a writer? That's OK - I've got some more traditional gifty ideas, too. For the edgy foodie dad, how about one of these food lover temporary tattoos ($7.95)? I love the heart with "bacon" in it. Or what about Zingerman's "Praise the Lard" gift box ($100)? At two and a half pounds of bacon, plus bread and chocolate, it's not for the faint of heart (or high of cholesterol) but, wow, that's a lot of great fat.
If you're more of a traditionalist, you can't go wrong with grilling gifts from Williams-Sonoma. I like this mesh grill-top roasting pan ($39.95). It's a legitimately useful grilling tool and something that most dads are unlikely to have.
And if you want to go all out, go green. As in "Big Green Egg," the iconic smoker that, as it's name suggests, looks like a big green egg. They're available at home and garden centers (along with some other places) all over the state. Yes, they are pricey (somewhere between $600 and $1000). But come one, he's your dad. Isn't he worth it?
So, DSFDI, I hope this at least gives you a starting point. Good luck!
