Sotto Sopra is pretty inside and out. Photo from the restaurant's website.

Starting today, this column will no longer be a randomly constructed collection of recipes and party planning ideas. Instead, it'll be an advice column (full of recipes and party planning ideas). If you've got a question that's about food, restaurants, entertaining, or anything else, for that matter, email me at kit@kitpollard.com. And we start with a question from my mother:

Dear Kit,

As you know, your father's and my wedding anniversary is on Wednesday (37 years!). A few months ago, you told us about a restaurant someplace in Baltimore you thought we'd like. Where was that, again?

We're looking for someplace different to have dinner. Not necessarily fancy, but good.

Love, Mom

Dear Mom,

Happy almost anniversary! I remember that conversation - I told you that you and Dad would really  like Samos, in Greektown, and that you should go there with your friends. It's really fun and the food is excellent - we loved it. However, it's not much of an anniversary spot. It's a little too crowded and noisy and you can't make reservations.

There are a lot of other places that you might like, though. Like The Black Olive (410-276-7141, 814 South Bond Street, Fells Point). It's a little too expensive for everyday meals, but the food is amazing (especially the grilled octopus salad) and I'm not sure you can find fresher seafood around.

Or what about Sotto Sopra (410-625-0534, 405 North Charles Street, Mount Vernon)? It's so pretty inside and the food is excellent sophisticated Italian (plus, they have a $38 three course tasting menu on Wednesday nights). I haven't been, but I've also heard great things about the Italian food and the service at La Famiglia (443-449-5555, 105 West 39th Street, Tuscany-Canterbury). Staffed to the gills with former Bocaccio employees, it's hard to imagine anything but good food coming out of that kitchen.

If you're in the mood for something a little more steak-and-martini-ish, you could try The Capital Grille (443-703-4064, 500 East Pratt Street, Inner Harbor). It's a chain, but a really good one. I had a fantastic lunch there a couple of years ago and I've heard good recent reports, too.

Finally, if you like the idea of a traditional "anniversary" spot, try The Brass Elephant (410-547-8480, 924 North Charles Street, Mount Vernon). The new(ish) menu has gotten rave reviews, and with the entrees under $25, it's not outrageously expensive. Plus, I think you might like the bar there.

Let me know what you choose. And happy anniversary!
