Adding some glam to the kitchen
If your kitchen is anything like mine, the counters are usually covered with mail and the floor is cluttered with toys and cheerios and (in my case at least) day-old Play Doh scraps. I like my kitchen - it's new and it's cool and it's a great place to both cook and hang out - but I'm also drawn to kitchens that have that extra bit of sophistication. That little bit of glamour.
If you're in the market for a new kitchen, and you think you might want to glam it up a bit, try these tricks:
- Add some shimmer. Mirrors, irridescent backsplashes, really shiny cabinets and floors (like the photo at the right) - these are all great ways to sex-up your kitchen space.
- Grown-up light fixtures. In the kitchen, it's tempting to stick with recessed lighting or very simple fixtures. But as the kitchen at the right and this photo both show, a really fancy chandelier can dress up even an understated space. Plus, the actual light distributed by a chandelier is softer and sexier than anything overhead. Perfect for a late-evening cocktail party.
- Be bold with the color. All black, all white, or something unexpected and sophisticated - color choices have a ton of impact.
- Try on a new shape. There's no rule that says that kitchen counters have to be straight lines. Get creative. Go curvy. Add wine racks and open shelves and other interesting (and even functional) nooks and crannies.
