My very own blog, Mango & Ginger.

Ah, the land of the food blog. A couple of years ago, not long after I started my own personal food blog, Mango & Ginger, writer Pete Wells graced Food & Wine with a much-publicized rant about the state of the food blogging community. To put it gently, he wasn't that impressed with most of what he saw.

To be fair, I think that's not something limited to food blogs. Sure, there are a lot of bad food blogs out there - there are a lot of bad, boring blogs out there, period. But there are also so many good ones that it would be impossible to find time to read them all. Plus, it can be overwhelming to sift through all the junk to get to the good stuff. Major blogs like Serious Eats are fantastic, and of course I love the Baltimore blogs (check out the M&G sidebar), but what about the little(ish) guys?

If you have a few extra minutes one day and you're in the mood for a little light food reading (and you've already pored through Examiner.com and Mango & Ginger, of course), spend some time with these blogs:

  1. Manolo's Food Blog. A part of the Manolo shoe-blogging empire (no, not the Manolo, though he's a fan), blogger Mr. Henry philosophizes and shares his fabulous food experiences from his home in New York - or wherever he happens to be at the moment. This week, it's Barcelona.
  2. So Good Blog. He's in DC, he's funny,  he's topical. If you're not into pop culture commentary, this blog's not really for you. But if you are...go there.
  3. S.A.L.T. The Society for the Appreciation of the Lowly Tinned Sardine. It's fish-in-a-can plus beer. What more could you ask for?
  4. Domaine 547. Wine, but cool and not at all snobby or elitist. Pretty great.
  5. Naughty Curry. Just a couple of kids and a kitchen full of Indian spices. Go for the food, stay for the commentary.
