Dixon, having some tea and eating some cake. Photo by Kit Pollard.

Like most people with health-related New Year's resolutions, my resolve is already starting to weaken. As a result, I'm looking all over the place for justification that my regular activities (especially the easy ones) have tons of extra health benefits. One of those daily activities is drinking tea.

I've never been much of a coffee drinker, but I do love tea. My favorites are Tazo teas - specifically their chai and their lemongrass spearmint (that's what Dixon's drinking in the picture at right - he loves it).

While no study has ever provided incontrovertable evidence that drinking tea has health benefits, numerous benefits have been suggested, especially for green teas (like the lemongrass spearmint). They include:

  • An increased metabolic rate (this one is very attractive to me - doesn't it sound like "get thinner without effort?")
  • Potential anti-diabetes and anti-cancer properties
  • Improved mental alertness and decreased chances of cognitive impairment
  • Lower stress levels (I'm sure this is true for me, though it might have more to do with the act of drinking tea than the tea itself)
  • Enhanced immune system

Again, none of these benefits have been proven scientifically. But I certainly like the sound of all of them. A cup of tea, a tiny cucumber sandwich and even possibly a piece of cake. Can you think of a better, more relaxing, afternoon snack?
