Purple haze: food edition
Big week in Baltimore, huh? The tension's pretty palpable as we work our way up to this coming weekend's AFC championship game - Ravens vs. Steelers.
I like football, but of course my mind's more on the food than what's happening on the field. Later this week I'll have some suggestions for gameday food that's a little more upscale than the usual chips-and-chili combo (though those are great, too). But today, I'm all about the purple food.
Purple, like blue, is a color that's not found all that frequently among natural foods. But it's there, if you just know where to look. So if you're looking for a way to pay visual homage to the home team, here are some perfectly purple suggestions:
- Red onion: Make a Greek salad - it's simple and the purple shines through. Or use red onion to make an onion confit, and serve it as a condiment on scalloped potatoes or even for burgers.
- Eggplant: Unfortunately, the minute you cut eggplant, it loses the purple effect. Still, you could use some as a centerpiece, then make a delicious eggplant parmesan or eggplant tempura dish on Monday night.
- Purple cauliflower: It's not that easy to find - try Whole Foods - but if you can get your hands on some, try this delicious cauliflower soup. It might look like Barney soup, but it's very team spirited.
- Mashed potatoes: Trader Joe's sells little bags of purple potatoes. Most nights, I'm only willing to roast them - they're cool looking, but kind of creepy. But for Sunday, I think a nice, rough purple mash would be just the way to go.
What other purple foods are out there? Anybody planning to pick through the Skittles to serve just the purples?
