Well, we've lived through our visit from Anthony Bourdain. As was widely reported, Bourdain was spotted (by regular Elizabeth Large commenter Sean) at Penn Station, arriving in Baltimore with his good buddy, Zamir. They were in Baltimore filming a show for this season's No Reservations, Bourdain's part-travel, part-food, part-dark humor show on the Travel Channel.
I've been a big fan of Bourdain's since I first read his down and dirty (and I do mean dirty) professional kitchen expose Kitchen Confidential, five or six years ago, and I've loved Zamir ever since the NR Russia episode. Or was it the Ukraine? I'm not sure, but by the time Romania rolled around, I was sold on his Eastern European charm. I'm psyched to see what they do in Baltimore.
But, I have to admit, I'm also a little anxious about it. After reading Bourdain's blog post on his visit, I'm worried about the edit. He seemed to enjoy the city, and I think he probably gets it - at least to some degree. But I'm also worried that most of his visit was spent in the company of people involved with The Wire. It might be the Greatest Show on Television, but it doesn't exactly portray the city in a positive, forward-thinking light. Granted, we might not always deserve the shining star edit, but Baltimore's not all boarded up row houses filled with bodies or underemployed, mobbed-up longshoremen, either.
We don't have a date yet for the Baltimore (+Detroit+Buffalo) episode. But I can assure you, I'll be watching! Cringing, maybe, but watching.
