I like New Year's Eve dinners at home...this one was a favorite

It's the end of December and the pressure is on. New Year's Eve is traditionally one of the biggest party nights of the year, so expectations run high. There's no need to stress, though, and there's no one right way to celebrate the start of 2009.

Whether you're in the mood to go black tie or you'd rather throw on some paint-splattered old jeans, New Year's Eve in Baltimore offers something for everyone. Stuck for an idea? Try one of these:

  1. The Big Blowout: If you've got the energy and inclination, why not host a huge party? Some of my favorite New Year's memories have been of house parties - including 1999-2000, when I celebrated in a mid-renovation house in Canton (at least we didn't have to worry about making a mess). Even now, at the last minute, tons of people don't have plans and would love an invitation. Stick to champagne, beer and wine and simple hors d'oeuvres (I'd even think about carrying out from Wegmans or Whole Foods), make sure you have party hats and noisemakers and enjoy.
  2. Dining Out: This is an odd admission, but I've never been out to dinner for New Year's Eve. Sometimes it's not the greatest night to head to a restaurant - they're often taxed and have limited menus. But that's definitely not the case everyplace, and there are some great dinners to be had out there.. Check out this list of Baltimore restaurants offering dinner on New Year's Eve for more information.
  3. Dining In: My absolute favorite New Year's Eve involves a small group of friends, lots of wine and a nice dinner at home. It doesn't have to be anything fancy - though it can be. The beauty of this kind of celebration is that it can be anything you want it to be.
  4. Movie Night: Not feeling up to anything big? Invite a couple of friends to hang out and watch movies. If you're feeling inspired, dress it up with truffle popcorn and fancy cans of champagne.
  5. Road Trip: Feeling full of energy? Book a hotel room, hop in the car and head to DC. There's always something going on there - from official events to bars that stay open late.

If you're in downtown Baltimore, don't forget to pause at midnight to watch the fireworks over the harbor (I'd recommend a rooftop deck for ideal viewing). In fact, as long as it's not too cold, milling around downtown (or in Annapolis) is also a great, family-friendly way to spend the evening.

No matter what you do, have a Happy New Year!
