Last night, Cooper and Jen and Bill and I made the trek down to the Towson circle for the annual lighting of the Towson Christmas tree. The lighting of the tree literally takes about ten seconds (and that includes the time spent counting down), which makes it a little anticlimactic, but the extraneous activities, especially the singers, make the whole event feel festive and fun.
Of course, for us, the most exciting part of the evening was the arrival of Santa Claus. At two, Dixon and Maddy are both old enough to completely understand the concept of Santa, even if the actual guy in the red suit is still a little intimidating.
When Santa and Mrs. Claus emerged from their fire engine, announced by a curiously holiday-themed Ben Franklin lookalike, both kids immediately stopped talking and started staring, but no amount of prodding would get them to actually talk to Santa. Fortunately, that wasn't a problem for Santa, who had to wade through throngs of older kids.
However, a couple of hours later, while we were comfortably ensconced in a booth at Strapazza, trying to keep as much pizza off the floor as we could, Santa and Mrs. Claus made another appearance, and this one was more of a success. From the safety of their seats, Dixon and Maddy squealed and clapped, saying hi to the big guy over and over again. A couple of candy canes later, they couldn't stop talking about their Santa sighting.
If you missed the Towson tree-lighting last night, never fear. The big one - the lighting of the Washington Monument - takes place this Thursday night, December 4th, with festivities starting at 6 p.m. and actual lighting around 7:30 (the full program of events is here).
And yes, in addition to the spirit of the season, there will be food.
